Getting started

What is The Stack?

The Stack is a daily briefing app for iPhone. You pick up to 5 topics you care about — news, sports, tech, finance, history, and more — and each morning you get a set of AI-summarized cards, one per topic.

Swipe through your stack in a few minutes and start the day informed. No algorithm, no infinite scroll — just the information you chose.

How do I set up my first stack?

When you open the app for the first time you'll go through a short onboarding flow:

  • Browse categories or tap a Quick Stack to load a preset.
  • Select up to 5 topics using the checkboxes.
  • Tap Build My Stack when all 5 slots are filled.

Your stack is saved on-device. No account or sign-in is required to get started.

Do I need to create an account?

No account is needed for the core experience. Your topic selections and streak are saved locally on your device.

We plan to add optional sign-in (via Apple or Google) in a future update, which will unlock features like custom topics and push notifications.

What time does my stack update?

Cards are pre-generated every night between 1–3 AM and are ready by the time most people wake up. If today's content isn't available yet when you open the app, it will automatically fall back to yesterday's cards while the new ones finish generating.

Topics & stacks

How many topics can I pick?

You can select up to 5 topics at a time. This is intentional — The Stack is designed to be a focused, finite briefing, not another endless feed.

Can I change my topics?

Yes, at any time. From the main card stack, tap the settings icon in the top corner to open the topic editor. Remove topics and add new ones, then tap Update Stack. Your new topics will appear in tomorrow morning's stack.

What are Quick Stacks?

Quick Stacks are curated topic bundles — a fast way to get a great starting stack without building one from scratch. The current Quick Stacks are:

  • The Curious — Science, history, philosophy, space
  • Money Moves — Markets, crypto, real estate, personal finance
  • Arts & Culture — Film, music, literature, design
  • Inner Work — Mindfulness, psychology, productivity

You can load a Quick Stack as-is or customize it after loading.

How does the streak work?

Complete your full stack (swipe through all 5 cards to the Done screen) and your streak increments by one. If you skip a day, your streak resets to 1 on the next completion.

Streaks are stored locally on your device and displayed on the Done screen after each session.

Content & sources

Where does the content come from?

It depends on the topic type:

  • News topics (world, US, politics, science) — fetched from BBC News RSS feeds, then summarized by AI.
  • Tech & business topics — fetched from Hacker News feeds, summarized by AI.
  • Sports topics — pulled from team-specific Reddit communities directly on your device.
  • Evergreen topics (history, philosophy, finance basics, etc.) — generated by AI using curated expert context.
Is the content generated by AI?

AI is used to summarize content from real sources — it doesn't invent news. For live topics (news, tech, sports), the AI reads raw articles or posts and distills them into the card format.

For evergreen topics like history or philosophy, the AI generates explanatory content based on well-established knowledge. These cards are educational and topical rather than breaking news.

A card has incorrect or outdated information — what should I do?

Please report it to thestackapp10@gmail.com with the topic name and the date you saw the card. We can manually regenerate content for specific topics if something went wrong with the daily pipeline.

Why doesn't my sports team have today's content?

Sports cards are fetched live from Reddit each time you load your stack. If the relevant Reddit community hasn't posted a game recap or news thread yet, the card may show recent posts rather than today's specific game.

Make sure you have an active internet connection when opening the app. If the issue persists, try closing and reopening The Stack.

Account & data

Where is my data stored?

Your topic selections, streak count, and app preferences are stored locally on your device using iOS's standard storage (UserDefaults). This data is not sent to our servers and is not associated with any account.

The only network requests The Stack makes are to fetch your daily card content.

How do I delete my data?

Since all personal data (topic preferences, streak) is stored locally on your device, deleting the app removes all associated data. There is no account to delete and no server-side user data to request removal of.

Does The Stack collect personal information?

No. We do not collect, store, or share any personal information. The app does not require sign-in and stores all preferences locally on your device. See our Privacy Policy below for full details.

Troubleshooting

The app is stuck on the loading screen

The loading screen should take no more than about 10 seconds. If it's stuck longer:

  • Check your internet connection.
  • Force-quit and reopen the app.
  • If the problem persists, try deleting and reinstalling the app. Your topic selections can be re-added in under a minute.

If none of that helps, email us at thestackapp10@gmail.com.

Cards say "Error" or show placeholder content

This usually means the daily content generation didn't complete in time for that topic, or there was a network issue fetching your content. Try pulling to refresh or closing and reopening the app.

If you consistently see errors for a specific topic, please report it to thestackapp10@gmail.com with the topic name.

My streak reset unexpectedly

Your streak increments when you complete your full stack (reach the Done screen). If you closed the app before reaching Done, that day won't count. Streaks also reset if a full calendar day is skipped.

If you believe your streak reset in error, contact thestackapp10@gmail.com — we can't restore streaks remotely right now, but it helps us track potential bugs.

How do I reinstall the app without losing my topics?

Note your current topic selections before deleting the app, as they are stored only on-device. After reinstalling, go through onboarding and re-select the same topics — it only takes a minute. We plan to add account-based sync in a future update.
